Fisher Science Education is committed to promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education in schools all across the country. As demand for jobs in these fields continues to grow, it is important that students possess the necessary skills to face the challenges of the 21st century with confidence and innovation. As part of our corporate responsibility efforts, we also believe in making the world healthier, cleaner and safer and are always encouraging students to experience science safely. With this goal in mind we teamed up with our parent company Thermo Fisher Scientific to create a program that brings STEM and lab safety into the classroom like never before.
The classroom is in the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School, an urban K-6 school providing students a rigorous education that develops students’ curiosity and character with an emphasis on mastering 21st century skills. The program is assembling and donating “STEM-credible” lab safety kits that are ready to be used in the science lab by any student who receives one. The main goal of this program is to provide lab equipment to schools who don’t have the necessary budgets to purchase them on their own. These kits include splash guard goggles, a splash guard apron, gloves, and a lab notebook that all allow students to explore the world of science right in the classroom.
A few weeks ago, 60 Boston-area Thermo Fisher Scientific employees traveled to the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School to personally deliver 400 of these kits to their students. The experience was extremely rewarding and inspiring to everyone involved and to show their appreciation, students from the school’s Voices of Renaissance choir sang and recited poems to the company’s leaders.
Because of our employees’ amazing efforts, we’ve been entered in the 2016 Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship Film Festival! The mission of the Film Festival is to honor excellence and recognize the hard work of corporate citizenship programs. You can check out the short video here that highlights our trip to the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School and hear feedback about the experience from some of our leaders.
